Less sodium foods

The chemical name for salt is sodium chloride. Sodium in the blood helps to maintain the electrolyte balance inside and outside of cells.

Sodium is everywhere in processed foods, including in a slice of multigrain bread, In fact, a serving of Cheerios contains more sodium than a serving of slated potato chips. Salt is so extensively used in food processing and manufacturing, processed foods account for an estimated 75% of total sodium consumed.

Lots of medical conditions cause doctors to recommend lowering sodium intakes. Some of the more common ones are high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, Meniere disease and liver disease.

An elevation in blood pressure increases the risk of stroke. Research also found that excess salt in the diet can increase osteoporosis.

Excess salt in the diet has been shown to increase the risk of stomach cancer, ulcers and migraines.

Terms such as free, very low, reduced or light in conjunction with sodium on food labels are associated with specific amounts of sodium per serving. In case of reduced or less indicates at least 25% less sodium per serving than appropriate reference food.
