Eurycoma longifolia

Eurycoma longifolia is a slender tree native to Malaysia, lower Burma, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Eurycoma longifolia, a famous folk medicine also known as ‘Pasak Bumi’ in Southeast Asia, has been used as an antimalaria and tonic etc. The root is employed as a traditional remedy for the treatment of high blood pressure, fevers, fatigue, loss of sexual desire, and impotence.

In Malaysia, Eurycoma longifolia or tongkat ali or Ali’s Walking Stick is the object of a sexual potency craze, an ingredient found in over three hundred products, from herbal syrups to capsules to popular soft drinks. Eurycoma longifolia is everywhere, driving the lusty engine of steamy, equatorial Southeast Asia.

Eurycoma longifolia root is one of the main ingredients used in preparing Malay traditional medicine. Water boiled with Eurycoma longifolia is believed to increase male virility.

Traditional Malay medicine folk medicine practitioners used it to treat malaria, eliminate parasite and to treat cancerous tumors, particularly those of the lung and breast.

Eurycoma longifolia Jack is a small tree with compound leaves on branches that can grow up to 1 meter long. It has a sparse appearance, with coarse, dark bark, a feathery leaf cluster at the top and a well developed root system.

The flower are tiny reddish, unisexual and are densely arranged.

Tongkat Ali is found in wasteland, poor, dry or sandy soils and also as an understorey plant in secondary forest.
