Fish oils beneficial effects to human health

Fish oil is derived from the tissues of oily fish. Scientists came to know about many benefits of fish oils in the early 1970s when Danish physicians observed that Greenland Eskimos had an exceptionally low incidence of heart disease and arthritis despite the fact that they consumed a high-fat diet.

Fish oil is a major source of ω−3 (Omega-3) and ω−6 (Omega-6) essential fatty acids. It prevents major heart diseases, cancer, diabetes, mental disorder, arthritis and many other health problems.

Omega-3 fatty acids (omega-3s) are a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids that are important for a number of functions in the body.

The strongest and most established body of science for the marine Omega-3 FAs is in relation to cardiovascular health. In addition to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, research has also linked Omega-3 FAs to improved heart rhythms, and a reduced risk of a second heart attack.

The three-principal omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It is recommended for a healthy diet they are the precursors to eicosanoids that reduce inflammation throughout the body.

Omega-3s are important components of the membranes that surround each cell in human body. DHA levels are especially high in retina (eye), brain, and sperm cells.

Levels of EPA influence many physiological processes, including calcium transport across cell membranes, angiogenesis, apoptosis, cell proliferation, and immune cell function. These processes are integral to the immune system and hence the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases such as arthritis, systemic lupus erythematous, and asthma, as well as cancer.
